「青いぼうしのほうが、白いものよりももっとよいです。」を英語では、 The blue hat is better than the white one. というんだ。

注目してほしいポイントは better という表現。 betterは「もっとよい」という意味で、実は形容詞goodが変化した形 なんだ。

good-gooder-goodestのように変化はしないんだね。

goodは特殊で better「もっとよい」、best「一番よい」 と変化する。これが今回のポイントだよ。
bestの前にはtheがつく

betterとbestを使った文を確認していこう。
This camera is better than that one.
「このカメラは、あれよりももっとよい。」
This camera is the best of all.
「このカメラは、すべての中で、1番よい。」

「一番~」というときはbestの前にtheをつける のがルールだよ。忘れないようにしよう。
well-better-bestと変化

形容詞goodと同じように特殊な変化をするのが、「上手に」という意味を表す副詞wellだよ。
wellも特殊で better「もっと上手に」、best「一番上手に」 と変化するんだ。

例文で確認してみよう。
Yumi plays the piano better than me.
「由美は、わたしよりももっと上手にピアノをひきます。」
Yumi plays the piano the best in my class.
「由美は、クラスの中で一番上手にピアノをひきます。」

likeと組み合わせた表現

最後にもう1つだけ、よく使う表現を覚えておこう。
「~のほうが好き」や「~が一番好き」というときは動詞likeとbetter、bestを使って次のように表現するよ。
I like the blue hat better .
「わたしは、青いぼうしのほうがより好きです。」
I like the blue hat the best .
「わたしは、青いぼうしが一番好きです。」

2つを比べて「もっと~」というときは、形容詞や副詞のうしろにer をつけたね。 3つ以上を比べて「一番~」といいたいときは、形容詞や副詞にest をつけたね。
